The ruins of Hampi are a UNESCO World Heritage Site with carvings dating back to the 14th Century. Hampi was built on the banks of the Tungabhadra river. It was established by the Vijayanagara Empire, but the very first historical records state that the settlement in Hampi dates back to 1 CE.
