Raigad, Mumbai, Maharashtra
Raigad is one of the districts in the Konkan Division of Maharashtra bound by the Arabian Sea. This was the capital city of the Maratha Sovereign in the old times.
The west-facing spur of the Western Ghats holds up the famous Raigad Fort. This hillfort was also called the “Gibraltar of the East” by the Europeans and is surrounded by several gateways. In today’s time, people have set up Raigad Ropeway to help the visitors, avoid the strenuous climb.
Raigad is home to the historical Chavadar lake that lies in the Mahad town of Raigad District, famous for the satyagraha done by Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar on 20th March 1927.
